WABCG

The decision to create the World Association of Beet and Cane Growers (WABCG) was made in Guadalajara, Mexico, by participants at the first World Sugar Farmers’ Conference organized by the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) in May 1981.

A Council of 20 representatives (10 beet members and 10 cane members) was elected at the Conference and charged with the mission of setting up an Association. In February 1983, the Council adopted on a provisional basis, a Constitution for the new Association;
17 national beet growers’ organizations and 16 national cane growers’ organizations joined the newly formed WABCG as founding members.
The formal adoption of the Constitution of the WABCG took place in Paris, October 1984 at the 2nd World Sugar Farmers’ Conference.
The World Association of Beet and Cane Growers (WABCG) is the only international organization that brings together national-level organizations of beet and cane growers on a worldwide basis.
WABCG is a specialized body of IFAP competent to deal with all matters relating to sugar beet and sugar cane. Therefore, WABCG acts as the spokesperson on sugar affairs within the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP).
The Association maintains close contact with other international organizations concerned with the sugar industry, and in particular the International Sugar Organization (ISO). The Association is entirely financed and controlled by its member organizations.
